Match Preview: Gotham FC returns to Red Bull Arena to face the Houston Dash

HARRISON, NJ (Thursday, August 29, 2024) –. NJ/NY Gotham FC will take on the Houston Dash on Sunday, Sept. 8 at 1:00 p.m. ET (ESPN2). Gotham FC returns to regular-season play on Sunday and is looking to quickly return to the win column.

Most recently, the club is coming off a commanding 4-0 win in its opening match in the Concacaf W Champions Cup against Liga Deportiva Alajuelense Femenino. In the match, Gotham FC featured four different scorers. Esther, Katie Stengel, Jenna Nighswonger, and Delanie Sheehan all found the back of the net en route to the club’s victory. 

For Houston, its last NWSL regular season match was on Saturday, Aug. 31 in a 3-1 loss to the Utah Royals. The team’s solo goal was scored by Andressa Alves in the 73rd minute. 

Gotham FC will be looking to extend their impressive defensive record at home. They've achieved shutout victories in their last three consecutive home matches across all competitions. Their strong performance at Red Bull Arena has been a consistent theme this season, with the team winning four of their last five games at their home ground.

In the standings, Gotham FC is just one point behind a top three placement in the league, the club currently sits fourth with 34 points across NWSL Regular Season matches. The Houston Dash sit last in the league.

The last matchup between the two clubs was on May 8, where Gotham FC won 1-0. The lone goal was scored by forward Lynn Williams in the eighth minute of the match.
